Can You Still Feel the Pain?
Dan:
“Can You Still Feel the Pain” is the familiar story of the crucifixion of Jesus, but the deeper idea is that it wasn’t the Jews or the Roman’s who crucified Jesus it was all of us. It was me. “I drove the nails.” I’m responsible for Him going to the cross because a pure sacrifice for my sins was needed so that I might have a path for salvation. We wondered when writing this song if Christ still feels the pain of the cross. He certainly has the reminders of the cross with the nail scars in his hands and feet. I would think he doesn’t feel the physical pain, but what about the pain of rejection by the very people for whom he died? I think about how that must make Him feel as He now sits at the right hand of God the father. My guess is that His heart breaks for every soul that is lost.
Lee:
Can-Pain used to have a light country, almost happy, feel that didn't quite fit the lyrics. When we started work on a new version, Mark had heard some songs where the first change was to the relative minor. I didn't grasp it at first but Mark had the vision to press ahead and we ended up with this feel of introspection and reverence. I enjoy Mark's guitar work, especially the opening pick-ups that remind me of a spring sunrise.
Mark:
I don't think my headphones are working. Can anyone hear me?
