In Between

Mark:

We knew we wanted an intro for "Keep On" that would provide a contrast and transition from the more aggressive styles of the other songs.

Lee:

Mark had wanted “Keep On” to be piano based but it had developed with an abrupt start.  So at some point we added a number of empty bars on the front end for an intro.  They stayed empty for quite a while but I borrowed a couple of motifs from “Keep On” and, with a little practice at home, devolved them to a very open structure that starts with that broken triplet feel.

Mark:

It was pretty much done in one take so all that was left was what to call it.  Dan wanted to tie it to the lyrics of “Keep On.”  Lee mentioned just “Interlude” which sounded stiff.  “In between motion and thought” caught our attention but seemed too long for such a short track.

Lee:

All of a sudden Mark said, “In Between!” like, “Come on, guys don’t you get it?”   I said, “That’s what ‘interlude’ means.” and the name stuck.

Dan:

One of the reasons I like having instrumentals on the album is it gives the listener time to reset and just absorb the music without the complication of words.  The first time I heard Lee play this piece I thought “perfection.” It gently takes you out of one message and beautifully prepares you for the next.
