Where Have They All Gone?
Dan:
We wrote this song after seeing a Christian movie called “A Thief in the Night” back in the late ‘70s. The movie was about the rapture, and unfortunately was really cheesy. The movie’s theme song was equally cheesy, and I can remember saying to Mark “we could write a better song in our sleep.” So we began to work with the idea of people being left behind, and the anguish which they will face when they realize that Jesus came and left them because he did not know them. How and when Christ will return has been debated since Jesus’ resurrection, but I think the broader issue is the idea of being separated from God. The rapture, if nothing else, is a glimpse of what it will be like for those who don’t know Jesus to be left behind and apart from God. The reality is that there is nothing more horrible than an eternal separation from Him.
Lee:
Before we had even thought of WoJ we had decided to see if we could achieve quality digital recording in a small home studio as opposed to the room full of analog equipment we had used years ago. We chose what we thought was our best Sojourner analog recording and had some grandiose ideas on instrumentation. But we kept the arrangement as it was to avoid additional effort in composing and rehearsal.
Mark:
We ended up with a great prototype that laid the foundation for our studio design and many of the recording methods we utilized on the rest of the album. After we had moved on to other songs we decided to “Justicize” the instrumentation to fit what had become the WoJ sound.
